To AI,
or not
to AI.

That is the question.

When to AI
and when not to AI

Innovation is still undefeated.

Tradition versus innovation is not a new fight. It has played out through history. The tools we use today were once resisted.

Undefeated

... but that doesn’t mean we discard tradition.

Yesterday’s heresy is today’s default.

1990sThe web / e-commerce

Dismissed as “brochureware,” a fad. The skeptics became the case studies.

1980sThe ATM

Supposed to end the teller. Instead, teller jobs rose for two decades and evolved.

1970sThe calculator

It retired the slide rule — never the math teachers.

The best way to predict the future is to invent it. — Alan Kay, 1971

Automate production, not origination.

AI as a tool

Net-positive · it compounds up

Leverage, speed, reach. The machine takes the grind so the human can do more of the work only a human can do.

Each honest output becomes the foundation for the next — the value stacks, and the human stays the author.

AI as substitute for talent

Net-negative · it compounds down

Dishonesty → misrepresentation → eroded trust → diluted identity. Each shortcut stacks — and outlives the saving.

Every shortcut is harder to walk back than the last, until the work feels soulless — and customers notice.

It diluted its own nostalgia

Rebuilt its beloved Christmas ad with AI, and the world called it “soulless.” It did it again the next year, cheaper, and was panned harder.

Stranded at the gate

A couple missed their trip entirely — ChatGPT got the country’s entry rules wrong, and they trusted it.

A hot spring that never existed

An AI travel site invented “Weldborough Hot Springs.” Dozens drove out; a local pub fielded the confused arrivals. There are none.

And on the topic of dishonesty

Blaming AI for layoffs — and the counterargument.

There was AI-washing (dressing up ordinary work as “AI”); now there is “AI layoffs.” Regulators have already started fining it.

Where we are now

What this shift means for a culture like ours.

Terrain dictates the game

Same tools. Different games.

China
Scale & speed: mass-produce, iterate, ship.
vs
Japan
Craft & discipline (monozukuri, kaizen, ikigai).
Europe
Industrial B2B: SAP, ASML, Dassault.
vs
India / Indonesia
Mass B2C; e.g. Gojek, Shopee, Jio.
The West
Mature, deep-capital markets.
vs
The Philippines
Similar language, different market, resources, maturity.

Cebu has lived both answers

We’ve been the passenger. We’ve been the driver.

The commodity, volume work bled out to automation and cheaper hubs. Design-led makers survived by competing on craft, not price.

How Cebu answered

AI as a tool. Never a substitute for real human talent.

Cebu already knows how.

Artists for ASEAN

Artist drawing by hand

72 hours, done by hand

On-the-ground mapping

Genuine, not generated

Animators

Enhanced, not obsolete

When AI gutted low-value animation, Cebu trained its animators up-market — Cebuanimation.

So — to AI, or not to AI?

We don’t reject innovation.
We embrace it — as the driver.

Because even with every tool, nothing beats human creativity.
